Circular economy and merchandise: products that close the loop

Economía circular y merchandising: productos que cierran el ciclo

The circular economy is one of the most transformative concepts of the past decade. Against the linear «make-use-dispose» model, the circular economy proposes a system where materials stay in use for as long as possible, get repaired, get reused, and at the end of their life get recycled into new products.

Corporate merchandise, as an industry, has an important role to play in this transition. Billions of promotional products are made around the world every year. The key question is: what happens to them afterwards?

The problem with linear merchandise

The traditional merchandise model follows a clear pattern: a cheap product (usually plastic) gets made, personalised with a logo, handed out at an event, and in many cases ends up in the bin within days or weeks.

This model generates:

Circular economy principles applied to merchandise

1. Designing for durability

The first principle is creating products that last. A stainless steel bottle used for 5 years is infinitely more circular than a single-use plastic cup. At Greenly, we prioritise products with a lifespan measured in years, not days.

2. Using recycled materials

Recycled PET backpacks (made from recovered plastic bottles) are a perfect example of circularity: waste gets turned into a product of value. Every recycled PET backpack keeps between 6 and 12 plastic bottles out of landfill or the ocean.

3. Ensuring recyclability at end of life

Single-material products (steel, cotton, wood) are easier to recycle than ones made of multiple materials. A recycled paper notebook with a metal spiral can easily be taken apart to recycle each component.

4. Using biodegradable materials

For products with a shorter lifespan, biodegradable materials ensure the product returns to the earth without leaving waste behind. Bamboo pens, kraft-card notebooks and jute bags are all fully biodegradable.

5. Enabling reuse

Some products are designed with multiple lives in mind. Organic cotton bags can be washed and reused hundreds of times. Stainless steel bottles get used daily for years.

How to communicate circularity to your clients

Include a lifecycle card with your corporate gifts that explains:

  1. Where the product’s material comes from (recycled, organic, certified origin).
  2. How long it’s designed to last.
  3. How to recycle or compost it at the end of its life.

This transparency builds trust and reinforces your brand’s environmental commitment.
