How to prepare your company logo for personalised merchandising

Cómo preparar el logo de tu empresa para personalizar merchandising

I’ll spare you the suspense: 80% of delays in a merchandising order aren’t the printer’s fault. They’re down to a poorly prepared logo. A tiny JPG pulled from the web arrives, or a PNG with a white background, and suddenly what was supposed to be ready in a week takes three because the file needs redoing. Let’s help you avoid that.

Format is everything: you need a vector

A bitmap logo (JPG, PNG) is made of pixels. If you enlarge it, it pixelates. A vector logo (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) is made of mathematical formulas: it can be printed the size of a pen or a four-metre banner and it looks perfect in both.

To personalise merchandising, you’ll almost always need the vector. If you don’t have it, find it. Whoever designed your brand will have it, or it’ll be in your corporate identity manual folder. And if it doesn’t appear anywhere, it can be vectorised from a high-quality original, though that takes time and sometimes has a small cost.

Colours: forget RGB

On screen, colours are RGB. In print, they’re something else. If your logo is a very specific green, you need to know its Pantone code (or its CMYK equivalent). It’s the only way to guarantee that your brand’s green is the same on the web, on business cards and on the 500 bottles you’re going to order.

If you don’t know your Pantone, it’s usually in your brand manual. Write it down somewhere safe: they’re going to ask you for it every time you place an order.

A version for dark backgrounds

This is always forgotten. You’re going to personalise a black bag or a dark steel bottle, and your logo is navy blue. Result: it’s not visible. Have a white or single-colour version of your logo ready for when the product is dark. It’s going to open up many more product options for you.

Detail size matters

A logo with very fine text or subtle gradients looks great on a billboard. In the laser engraving on a bamboo pen, that fine text disappears. It’s not a technical fault: it’s physics. If your logo has a lot of detail, consider a simplified version for small products. Your brand will still be recognisable and the result will be much cleaner.
